Liberal Democrats publish Wandsworth Manifesto12.12.22pm BST (GMT +0100) Sun 18th Apr 2010
The Liberal Democrats have published their manifesto "Towards a new Wandsworth" for the borough elections on 6th May 2010. In it they call for the council to take up a clear strategic direction towards the development of flourishing local communities. "For too long Wandsworth council has been managed purely according to short-term pressures. The costs of this are becoming increasingly apparent, as our roads and streets decay and local communities are replaced by increasingly temporary residents with no long-term stake in the area," says Matthew Green, Chair of Battersea & Tooting Liberal Democrats. The manifesto closes with a call for a new kind of politics in the borough. "A long time ago politics in Wandsworth was hotly contested and vibrant. Parties were forced to listen to the electorate. Those days are long gone. The Conservative dominance is now unchallenged." The Liberal Democrats say that councillors should work harder to stay in touch with their electors, all year round. Today this only happens where Liberal Democrats are posing a strong challenge. The Liberal Democrats are fielding a full slate of 60 council candidates in Wandsworth for the first time since 1998. "This reflects our growing strength and confidence," says Matthew Green. Related Link:
