A few years ago, Jon Irwin ran a petition calling on the Mayor to make improvements to Tooting Bec Road, from the Lido to the tube. We now have a first consultation.
The consultation is here, and closes on the 10th Sept.
It's not exactly what was asked for in the petition, but what is proposed is definitely an improvement from a road safety perspective. As ever with consultations, they are more likely to be improved and happen, if there are supportive responses with constructive ideas as to how the proposals can be improved.
Here are some suggested points that you may like to include:
1) Delighted that TfL recognise the benefits of providing protected space for cycling along Tooting Bec Road.
2) The proposals could be improved upon, in the following ways:
a) Bus stop by-passes (as have been successfully used in Waltham Forest)
b) Improving the form of protection - wands are good as an interim measure. When the road is next re-surfaced, the cycle tracks should be upgraded to grade level separation. (eg Camden, Waltham Forest, Kingston, Oval-Lambeth)
c) Shared path (east end) - given the acknowledgement by TfL that the road is wide enough to manage re-allocation of space for cycle use. Would it not be possible to continue the same approach taken between Dr Johnson Av and the junction with Aldrington Road east up to the gyratory?
d) Extend the scheme along the south side of Tooting Bec Common at least to the junction with Elmbourne Road.
If you would like to see improvements such as this in other parts of Wandsworth, do get in touch.
