A long-running Lib Dem campaign to pedestrianise part of Bedford Hill has borne fruit—temporarily.
After a five-year campaign, Wandsworth Council has pedestrianised part of Bedford Hill next to Sainsbury’s Car Park. The move has been a boost for local businesses, but the changes are experimental and are likely to be removed at the end of August.
Jon Irwin, on behalf of the Lib Dem’s Tooting Action Group, said: “It would be foolish to revert back to the motor traffic dominated space it was before without at least having a conversation with local businesses and the wider community.
He added:“The difference has been amazing. Families strolling through the space and businesses being able to serve customers in a socially distanced manner has been a sight to behold. Lib Dems recognise the concerns of motorists, but feel certain that this is a better solution than a permanently car dominated Balham town centre. We will continue to push the council to consult with the wider community.”
