Wandsworth Liberal Democrat AGM

The Wandsworth Liberal Democrats will be having our annual general meeting on the 23rd of October.

The agenda and accompanying notes links on this page, but the essential points are:

  • There will be reports on the local party’s current 2019 situation and activity by the Chair.
  • The Treasurer will present the main features of his budget for 2020, including specifically on the use which it is proposed to make of the Putney Development Fund. The accounts for 2018 will be for approval.
  • Reports will be made of the Party’s Autumn Conference
  • The meeting will consider the paper AGM (2019)1 proposing certain changes to the Local Party’s constitution, relating to the making of payments.
  • There will be an election of the Executive Committee for 2020, subject to the need for a ballot of the membership if posts are contested. Applications are invited for the positions concerned.

The agenda can be found here.

A copy of our current constitution can be found here and the proposed amendment can be found here.

If you wish to stand for an executive position the positions are described below. Application forms for the roles can be found here. Details on how to hand in the forms are on the bottom of the form.

Chair: The role of the chair person has two functions. The first is to provide vision and direction to the party and the second is to run the executive committee meetings and to coordinate between members of the exec to ensure action points are done. This role looks for someone who is organised and is good at not only mediating discussions between different groups but also drawing discussions to a close to finalize on a decision.

Campaigns Chair: Campaigning in the borough is delegated to local action groups. The campaigns chair has two roles. The first is to work with and oversea the different action teams to ensure good practice and ideas are spread throughout the borough. The second is to act as a conduit of information to the exec about the campaigns and to the campaigns team about what is going on within the executive.

Secretary: The role of secretary is organize the executive committee meetings, take minutes during the meetings and to notify members in a timely fashion of the date, full agenda and any papers circulated in advance for an AGM. It can also take the less well defined position of a general support role for the Chair to help them get things done. Good organisation and attention to detail are important for this role.

Treasurer: The role of treasurer is to control the purse strings of the party and file the legal documents necessary for us to remain tax compliant etc. This includes the checking of donations and reporting large donations to HQ on a monthly return. The finances of a local party can be quite complex and someone with a background in accounting is advised.

Membership Development Officer: The role of membership secretary is to ensure we actively engage with our membership and increase it. This person should be people orientated and happy to talk to different members of our party to make sure everyone feels engaged.

Data Officer: The data secretary role is to manage membership and voter information of the local party. This involves things like managing emails lists and ensuring we are compliant with data protection regulations. It is recommended that those who apply for this role are comfortable with computer systems, have a willingness to learn new software and are willing to deal with the legal requirements of GDPR.

Ordinary Executive Member: The role of the ordinary member is to support the objectives of the party, and be part of the collective decision making process. One Ordinary Member is selected to act as Vice Chair. Ordinary members may be appointed to other roles if the Executive thinks that such a role is required. Persons interested in this role should have a passion for improving the Wandsworth Liberal Democrats and a willingness to roll up your sleeves to get involved.

Diversity Officer: In addition to the Officers and ordinary members provided for in the Constitution, we wish to create a new role of diversity officer. The officer would be tasked with promoting a better representation in the Local Party of all sections of the Wandsworth Community, with particular reference to gender, ethnicity, age, disability and sexual orientation. Rather than ask an elected officer or ordinary member to take on this role, the Executive proposes that the post be filled by co-option from the membership using the Executives powers (in our constitution’s article 5.3) to co-opt up to 3 members for diversity purposes in particular. Applications for this post are accordingly invited, to be submitted in the same way as applications for elected posts, with a view to the 2020 Executive taking a decision on an appointment as soon as it is in a position to do so.
