Local Lib Dems have raised concerns that overcrowding has caused Wandsworth Prison to become a hotbed for coronavirus cases. Their statement followed new government figures last month which revealed that 873 prison staff in England and Wales have tested positive for Covid-19.
Sue Wixley, the Liberal Democrat London Assembly candidate for Wandsworth and Merton said: “While Wandsworth prison remains overcrowded there is no chance of social distancing. This puts the health of staff, prisoners and our community at risk.”
Daisy Cooper, Lib Dem Justice spokesperson, added: “The government is allowing prisons to become a crucible for the virus.”
Lib Dems have called on the government to release all low-risk prisoners serving short sentences and suspend any new short sentences. “With tough licence conditions and electronic tagging, the government can keep our communities safe from both crime and the spread of coronavirus," said Ms Cooper.
